bulletGrizedale Stages

Well a very very wet and slippery Grizedale forest greeted us on Saturday 8th December for this years outing.  The day started badly when a rear shock absorber mounting broke less than a mile into Stage One and our stage time was hit further with a spin in the spectator area when Graham got a bit carried away!!  However our luck was to get even worse on Stage Two when the huge amounts of standing water on the track made their way into the car electrics and caused a misfire every time the car revved any higher than 4000 RPM meaning a greatly reduced speed and with the lack of power to pull us out of trouble on the slippery stages hugely reduced confidence!!!  Two short runs through Broughton Moor formed Stages Three and Four and we cleared them with no real problems to report other than very slippery surfaces (as shown by the 5 cars off on one corner alone!), and as we emerged found ourselves 3rd in class and 38th overall despite the mornings troubles.  A quick service halt then it was off to stage 5.  We set off into the stage brimming with confidence only to break the other shock absorber mount on almost the same corner as the previous one, the car then cut out with yet another electrical fault costing us over a minute but worse was to come!!! As we approached a medium left hand bend around 6 miles into the stage the car drifted out of shape, we made it round the corner however we then snaked down a 60 yard straight trying to scrub excess speed before a K left, unfortunately Graham ran out of talent and the car slipped gracefully into the deep ditch on its side where it was firmly lodged!!!  That was the end of our event.  When the car was recovered (which took all of 60 seconds once the recovery team arrived) it had some mud under the headlight and a small dent in the front wing so at least we don't have a big repair bill to go with my dented ego!!!

bulletMalcolm Wilson Rally

A near off on corner one, stage one was quite a sobering moment!!  Still drove the pants off the nova through Grizedale which had recently been regraded with what can only be best described as walling stone in places causing a puncture on SS2, large rocks in regraded section in SS3 caused us to go off the road sideways into a banking damaging the passenger door. A "moment" on SS4 (Greystoke) left the back end of the car hovering above a 6 foot deep drainage ditch whilst the front wheel scrabbled desperately to pull the car out, thankfully the front wheels won!!!  The last 3 stages went without incident (yes we couldn't believe it either) and we finished up in Cockermouth 1st in class B8, 3rd in the 1400cc section and 50th in the overall standings, all 3 personal bests for Graham on this event.

Did Not Finish, in fact did not start due to blown clutch.

bulletJohn Overend Memorial Stages

A rather dramatic day with another broken gearbox, luckily only lost 20 seconds or so but it cost us the class win in the end.  Traded seconds all day with Darlingtons Derek Fawcett in a proper "ding dong" but lost out after we caught a mini on the last stage who wouldn't let us past him.  2nd in class (by only 9 seconds) and 32nd overall.

bulletGrizedale Stages Rally

Yet another trophy at the end of a rough and slippy Grizedale stages!!! 4th trophy in 4 consecutive years on this event.  Great rally with no major dramas, engine troubles and electrical faults all sorted and car ran beautifully all day.  Major credit has to go to Ian for all of his hard work in my absence in the run up to the event.  End result 51st overall and 3rd in class B9.  Hammered by fancy shiny Suzuki Ignis type creature-I want that one!!!

bulletJohn Overend Stages Rally

Unfortunately a fail to finish on this event after the car retired with electrical trouble, in all fairness it was the first retirement through mechanical failure in almost 5 years of rallying.  Testament to the hard work put into the car by Ian, Shane and others in the run up to events.

bulletMalcolm Wilson Rally

With the addition of a new stage (Greystoke) and after vowing last year we wouldn't do the event again we decided to have one last crack at the "Wilson".  Although service time was far to tight (10 minutes for the whole day) had a good enjoyable day despite nearly running out of fuel in Grizedale, brakes seizing on on SS1 and a massive spin in the spectator are of SS6!!!  Finished 64th overall and 9th in B9 (11th fastest 1400cc car overall out of 37 starters)

bulletGrizedale Stages Rally

Very slippy event with ruts big enough to bury a Nova 2nd run round!!!  Up against Steve Head in our class who went out on SS2. Eventually finished 49th Overall and 3rd in class.  Our best overall position on Grizedale ever so pretty well chuffed with that.

bulletMild & Bitter Stages

We took the lead in the class on stage 1 and built on it all day before taking things a little easier on the last stage to preserve the car for Grizedale, only to find the Mini that was 22 seconds behind us put in a storming run, taking 24 seconds off our stage time and beating us overall by 2 seconds.  Now that hurts!!!  Looking on the bright side I've learnt a valuable lesson, it's not all over till it's over.

JOMR04(Paul Pearce)LR.jpg (75380 bytes)With the new LSD fitted we took the nova to Melbourne airfield near York.  Bent steering arm and struggled to change the rack making it out of service only 1 minute before being penalised! 22nd Overall and 1st in class by 58 seconds against some tough local opposition.

bulletMalcolm Wilson Rally

The 2004 season got off to a trouble free start as we achieved the best ever class finish of 7th overall on this event but the worst ever overall finish of 86th.  No real problems other than the very slippy conditions where the logging had been.  Think the world must be moving on around us!!!

bulletGrizedale Stages

A good start to the rally saw us battling in the late 40's/early 50's on the leaderboard but we were forced to contest the final 5.5 stage miles with both drivers side tyres punctured before changing one of them and doing the 8 mile road section back to the finish with a only a rear puncture!!!  Eventually finished 62nd overall and still 3rd in class.

bulletMild & Bitter Stages

After a massive rush to get the car built in time (paint still wet as we loaded it onto the trailer) had an excellent result and was well chuffed.  Battled all day long with Paul Benn in flying Talbot Samba but led class all day to take 1st by 43 seconds in the end.  Also the massive bonus of our highest ever finish of 6th overall beaten only by a 6R4, a Focus, an EVO and 2 mk II escorts.

bulletLion Stages

13th Overall and 2nd in class after a real battle all day long with Phil Morton in the Datsun Sunny (allegedly 160 BHP@flywheel).  Leading 1400cc class all day until we lost 2nd gear on the last stage and dropped 40 seconds.  Chuffed with result and nearly beat 1600 category winner as well!  A good weekend away even if our tent was a bit cold and an excellently organised rally for such a small club.  Cheers guys.

bulletMalcolm Wilson Rally

62nd Overall and 8th in class against a strong field of fifty other 1300 and 1400cc cars on this very wet event.  Throttle cables snapped on stage 6 losing us 1 minute 30 seconds and then new cables slipped on stage 7 losing about 40 seconds after leaving us with only quarter throttle for 5 miles.  We were lying 5th in class and 14th 1300 car after stage 5, what might of been eh!!
